Aspen is not just for skiing. There is so much to see and do throughout the Roaring Fork Valley all year long. If you are planning a summer visit or extended stay—or if you are thinking of buying a home and living here year-round—here are 10 of the best outdoor activities to enjoy in Aspen:
1. Sightseeing
When the snow melts off in late spring, the valley truly comes to life throughout the summer. There are so many beautiful natural sights and sounds. Plan a picnic at Maroon Bells or a full hike over to Crested Butte! Drive up Independence Pass. Stroll through downtown and soak in the summer sunshine. This is one of those times of year when you really do want to stop and smell the roses—or whatever wildflowers are blooming along your journey!
2. Hiking
One of the best ways to get out and see the sights is to take advantage of one of the valley’s many hiking trails. There are mountain trails for all skill levels and you’ll get to see some of the most scenic locations up close and personal. Learn more.
3. Biking
Whether you are into road biking, mountain biking or light trail riding, Aspen is a cyclist’s dream. Get out on your bike and enjoy the fresh mountain air and gorgeous valley scenery. Aspen Pro Cycling is a great group riding and coaching program, and local sporting good stores have excellent bikes for rental or purchase.
4. Horseback Riding
Another really fun way to traverse the mountain trails is on horseback. Make a new equine friend. Places like Maroon Bells Guide & Outfitters, Owl Creek Ranch and Independence Pass Outfitting Company offer guided horseback tours, equipment rental and dedicated trails.
5. Fly Fishing
Fly fishing is a popular activity in Aspen, no matter what the season. Summertime is a great time for strapping on your waders and catching some fish in the Roaring Fork River or one of its tributaries. Learn more.
6. Whitewater Rafting
Speaking of the Roaring Fork River, a very popular summer activity is whitewater rafting. You can bring your own rafting gear or rent what you need in town. You can also sign up for an exciting guided group adventure through Aspen Whitewater Rafting.
7. Golf
There’s nothing quite like getting a little extra distance on your drives in the high altitude, especially when enjoying world-class mountain views in every direction. There are some great public golf courses in the Roaring Fork Valley like Aspen Golf Club, River Valley Ranch Golf Club, and Ironbridge Golf Club. If you want practice your short game, there is a 9-hole par-3 course in Carbondale at The Ranch at Roaring Fork. Or, if you can get an invitation to play at one of the private membership world-class local clubs, The Snowmass Club, Maroon Creek, or Roaring Fork Club, you will be ready to join after your round!
8. Lost Forest
Lost Forest is an outdoor adventure park in Snowmass that can be enjoyed by kids and adults alike. There are miles of hiking trails, rope courses, ziplines and disc golf. 9. Silver Queen Gondola
The Silver Queen gondola runs most of the year, transporting you to the top of Aspen Mountain at over 11,000 feet. Along the way, you’ll be able to see incredible views of the Elk Mountains, White River National Forest and Highlands Bowl. You can enjoy lunch at the Sun Deck and if you are there on Sunday July 10th-September 25th from 12pm-3pm there will be a live bluegrass band performing. 10. Aspen’s Saturday Market
The weekly Aspen’s Saturday Market has been a local tradition since 1988. You can check out art, food, clothing and other goods from local vendors, and be sure to say hello to the alpacas and goats. The 2022 Aspen Saturday Market will run from June 11th through October 8th and is open from 8:30am until 2:00pm. Starting September 10th, the hours are 9:00am until 2:00pm.
