Falling for Aspen: Autumn Events and Activities

It’s hard to believe summer is just about over with Labor Day this weekend, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. True Aspenites know that fall is one of the best seasons here. The temperatures start to cool down, the colors change dramatically, and there are so many fun activities and events to enjoy! Here are 6 things I am looking forward to in Aspen this autumn.

1. Food & Wine Classic

Normally this is one of Aspen’s best summer traditions. We all look forward to it. It was cancelled in 2020 and then postponed in 2021 to make it a fall event. It will take place on September 10-12, with three amazing days of cooking demonstrations, wine tastings and other activities that food and wine aficionados will love. The 2021 Food & Wine Classic is sold out, but there are still ways to enjoy it according to the Aspen Chamber of Commerce. Click here to learn more.

3. Aspen Filmfest

The annual Aspen Filmfest takes place September 21-26 and is hosted by Aspen Film. It is a great chance to see critically acclaimed festival films, sneak previews, documentaries and new releases. This is a noncompetitive festival that is simply about sharing a love for cinema with fellow filmgoers in an intimate setting.

3. Fall Activities

Autumn in Aspen offers a beautiful natural transition between summer and winter in the Roaring Fork Valley. Hiking and biking are two of the most popular activities this time of year. Traversing our best local trails will give you some incredible views of the changing colors. Fly fishing is another autumn tradition in this area, along with paddle boarding and golf before the early snow starts to fall.

4. Aspen Autumn Words Festival

This is a new event that hopefully becomes another annual Aspen tradition. It will take place September 25-October 1. It will be a special six-day gathering of writers and literary fans. The Autumn Words Festival is meant to be a celebration of stories, poems and creative ideas. There is quite a list of acclaimed speakers lined up for this inaugural event. Click here to learn more.

5. Golden Leaf Half Marathon

The Golden Leaf Half Marathon is returning to Aspen on September 18th. This is recognized as one of the country’s best half marathons and will draw runners from all across the United States for a challenging run through the Rockies. Click here to learn more.

6. Aspen Real Estate

Last fall was a uniquely busy real estate market in Aspen after things were shut down in spring and into early summer. I expect this fall’s market to be equally as fast-paced heading into our peak winter season. Buyers and sellers will want to take advantage of the good weather and make their moves before it starts snowing. People looking to winter here will especially want to get started with their relocation planning as soon as possible. Whether you are renting or buying, you can never start planning too soon!
